Among Brothers
My grandmother died alone, disconnected from her daughter and the family she yearned for but had alienated decades before. This burden of intergenerational detachment haunts me. I wake from dreams that this story has been written into my own family’s genes, the lack of connection pulsing within my veins. I feverishly search my memory for clues, dissecting and rebuilding them into parenting lessons with the hope of creating a new legacy for my children.
Among Brothers is a story of the burgeoning bonds that unite my three sons. It is visual evidence of a new family narrative; each photograph is both a seed of memory for my children and a breadcrumb to help me find our way. My own gaze is implicit within the images, making them a tribute to depth and tenderness of my love. By offering a glimpse into my family's intimate and nuanced connections, Among Brothers examines how we are shaped by our history and each other.
Through deeply personal images, Among Brothers reflects on broader psychological components of identity, family, and connection, and explores how past, present, and future are deeply interconnected. It raises important questions about what it means to live a connected life, how our past shapes us, and if it is possible to create a new narrative unbound from generational trauma. These questions are essential to the human condition and, although our answers may differ, we are undeniably united as humans by the fact that the place we come from leaves a fundamental imprint on who we become.
